The Elliot is likely an Armstrong relation, they were good neighbors to Gorrenberry. At least the oldest Thomas Armstrong of Mangerton, a younger brother called Gilnockie, got some Elliot hung, as part of his gallant company. Shows those older brothers have to keep an eye on their younger brothers, if they have them. What Elliot would want to claim relations to those Graham, Irving, Johnston, and Little. They were not the best of people like those Armstrong.
A younger brother which died around 1530, to oldest Thomas Armstrong, of Mangerton, which has 1540 land assessment, for Billhope, on the westside of Wm Elwald goodman of Gorrenberry land.
A Douglas Scott of Astro-physics, University of British Columbia, Canada, is from Hoik (Hawick), and is lucky though at times he may not think so to have a younger brother and active border ballad singer. Though he has the middle name ‘Hunter’, he’s still his younger brother. Elliot Chief receives a tribute to her grandmothers at Greenville, SC
Forty-eight Elliot Clan Society members participated in the Chief ís Dinner on Saturday evening during the Greenville Games.
During dinner, Elliot Clan Society member and South Carolina re-enactor, William Grissop, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina delivered a moving tribute to the Chief – honoring her Scottish Border and Southern Grandmothers. The Elliot Chief descends from a line of hereditary Chiefs back to the time of Robert the Bruce in the 1300s in Scotland. Through her Atlanta-born paternal grandmother, she also descends from many early South Carolina families who settled in that state before the American Revolutionary War. Here are the words Mr. Grissop shared with Margaret Elliott of Redheugh: Margaret Eliott is a daughter of the Scottish Borders, that fabled land that produced the men known as the Border Reivers or the Steel Bonnets. They were indeed men of steel. It need not be doubted that these men of steel sprang from, married and fathered women of steel. To even read casually of the Border history would make one wonder what sort of women were these who mothered, married and supported these men, the Steel Bonnets. These were strong women, resilient women, loving women. Were it not so, we of the Elliot Clan would not be here today. Our Chief, Margaret Elliott, is blood and sinew of these people. She is also blood and sinew of another proud line of strong women. Chief Margaret is also a Southern Girl! Her paternal grandmother was bornin Georgia and other grandmothers were born in South Carolina and Tennessee. (Being a native South Carolinian with much Georgia blood flow ing through my veins, I can readily state that this is about as much glory as one person can stand!) These women of the South have proven their glorious worth over the years.

To say I likely carry the Y-DNA of a William Elliott which donated the land for the First Baptist Church of Charleston, SC, and they came from a branch of Baptists out of Boston, from Kittery, Maine. 1] was born 22 Oct 1949 in the Greene Co Hospital, Jefferson, IA.
He was named to honor his grandfathers. He is ambidextrous. He
graduated from Roosvelt High School in Des Moines in 1968, having
attended grade schools in Manson and Sioux City, IA, and Topeka,
KS. He was involved in the Boy Scout program in Sioux City and
Topeka. He lettered his senior year in high school in wrestling.
He graduated with B.S. degree in history and economics from the
University of Wyoming in Laramie. While he was there he became a
member and resided in The TKE Fraternity. He joined an outdoor
club and heavily involved in mountain climbing and cross country
skiing. He scaled Devil’s Tower and several peaks in the Grand
Teton Range including the @I[Grand]. As of 1985 he had given up
Mountain climbing but still participated in cross country skiing,
back packing, and fishing. He worked for a short time in a trona
mine owned by FMC Corporation near Green River, WY, and became
interested in mining engineering. He returned to school at the
University of Utah in Salt Lake City and obtained a BS degree in
mining engineering in 1978. He was employed as a mining engineer
by National Gypsum in Shoals, Indiana, from 1979-83. He married
on 28 Feb 1978 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to @P[Mary Lou WATSON].
She was born in 1950 in Winston-Salem, NC. They were divorced in
1983 and had no children. Mark returned to school in 1983 to the
University of Indiana in Bloomington, IN, where he had resided
since 1979. He has been involved in a fellowship teaching and
working on a master’s degree in mathematics and computer science.
He took his practice teaching assigment the first five months of
1985 on an Indian Reservation near the Four Corners, located in
New Mexico. The summer of 1985 he was back at the University of
Indiana in school and teaching part time. The fall of 1985 he
accepted a job teaching in junior high at Crownpoint, New Mexico,
with 68 of his 69 students being native Americans. Crownpoint is
part of the Gallup school system. In 1986-87 he taught math and
computer science on the Zuni Indian Reservation south of Gallup.
He later taught in Sanders, AZ, and in 1995 was teaching in
Window Rock, AZ. He also taught a couple of college credit
courses at night in Gallup, NM. While in Indiana, he became a
member of the @I[Friends] Church. At a meeting in Gallup he met
Susan. On 27 Jun 1987 he married @P[Susan Roberta WARREN] in a
`Friends Ceremony’ in the Sacred Heart Retreat south of Gallup.
She was born in Johnson City, TN, 5 Mar 1955, and the daughter of
Hugh and Eloise WARREN of Garden City, SC. She served in the Air
Force and graduated from the University at Johnson City, TN. In
1987 she was a nutritionist working with the various Indian
tribes near Gallup. In 1989 she accepted the Home Economist
position for the county with office located in Gallup. In 1993
she accepted a position in Chinle in NE Arizona, employed by the
Federal Government in the health department working with the
Navajo Indians. She and Mark purchased a home in Gallup in 1987.
Mark has much interest in genealogy and his family history and
has made contributions searching libraries in Salt Lake City and
Indianapolis.

The reason I present the screen is that different people get different screens. In genealogy on needs to research in the language of their ancestors or find someone who can. They are looking for new information which ties into their family lines. To teach technique though I try to use other families, on techniques of family. One is for the best research biased towards their own family.

Though my family as recorded down many lines descended from Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the longest living signer of the Declaration of Independence cousin to John Carroll first bishop of the United States. Because my family is not Catholic or descendants thereof not Catholic, and likely an autosomal DNA connection, the question is would the Catholic Church accept DNA as verification of my relation to Charles Carroll of Carrollton, and first cousin first United States Bishop, or will they silence as anti-scientist (genetics is a science) or anti-family historians (genealogists) do is utilize silencing in the manner of Salem witch hanging judges.

There were a great many more Founding Fathers, however, even if their names are not so familiar as the above. Several of those lesser-known men who played key roles in the creation of the United States of America were Catholics. Chief among them were three members of the Carroll family of Maryland: Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence; his cousin Daniel Carroll; and Daniel Carroll’s brother John Carroll, who became America’s first Catholic bishop.

In 1965 the family of Loren Spencer and Alma Barna Elliott, met with mom’s sister’s family (same mtDNA her sister not known until after mother’s death and by DNA do not have the same biological father, though her sister oldest, and Catholic with twelve knew a lot about the Barna family). Visited the NY Worlds Fair, and Salem, MA witch history. Knew previous to DNA descendent of Daniel Elliott, 6th. DNA has shown related to a line of a number of people from the first son. Tour guide seemed to ignore dad when he said we were related to Daniel Elliott of the witch trials.

Dad, worked as an engineer. An engineer said the O-rings were bad on a shuttle, which an educator was riding on. He though highly educated in math and science, and strengths of materials a standard for engineers was superseded, the shuttle of course blew-up. The genealogist will go to browsers not capitalistic ad based, and influenced by corporate profits.
The computer does not know who are owners at first of the dot coms. After awhile images coming from particular dot coms as shared on other sites. For Google the advertisers are influencing the outcome.
With genealogy, to find new family, one must find new information, and that does not come from within, but without. The conquers are of the ‘status quo’, unify to write the history, but the refugees migrate the DNA. Family histories not the unified histories of dictatorial conquerors, the history from the grandmas is the more accurate history.

“THE CHARLESTON CHURCH AND ITS BRANCHES
After long acceptance of 1682 or 1683 as the year in which Rev. William
Screven came to South Carolina, it now appears certain that he was still in
Kittery (then under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts, now Maine) in January,
1696; and as the first record of his presence in South Carolina is a warrant for
one thousand acres of land dated December 7, 1696, he must have arrived in
South Carolina sometime in that year. f13 Mr. Screven is claimed to have come
to Kittery from Somerton, in Somersetshire, England, where some one of his
name (though not himself) subscribed a Baptist confession of faith in 1656. In
Maine his activity among his Baptist brethren brought him into disfavor with
the authorities. He was summoned for “blasphemous speeches about the holy
ordinance of baptism” and imprisoned for refusing to pay the fine imposed;
and finally, after having been licensed to preach by the First Baptist Church in
Boston on January 11, 1682, he was ordered to leave Maine. He seems,
however, to have remained for more than fourteen years before coming to
Carolina. During those years he was active in the life of Kittery and in the
Baptist cause, having collected a congregation which was organized as a
church on September 25, 1682. f14
The three probable reasons for Mr. Screven’s selection of South Carolina for
his final settlement were that toleration existed there; that the family of his
wife, Bridget Cutt (or Cutts), had lived for sometime in Barbados, and may
have received first-hand reports of the advantages of the settlement of 1670 on
the Ashley River, f15 and coming himself from Somersetshire, Mr. Screven may
have been in communication with the party brought over by Blake. Either
through previous acquaintance or by accident, Rev. William Screven appeared
in this province about the time that Joseph Blake again became governor. He
secured a second warrant, for fifteen hundred acres of land, in December,
1696, indicating that he had brought in a considerable number of people. In the
same month “Thomas Bulling had a warrt for five hundred acres of Land Lying
at Sumer towne, on the West Side of Stewart’s line,” and Robert Wetherick
had one hundred acres at “Sumerton;” he is described in the records of the
Court of Ordinary in 1700 as “late of New England, then of Sommerton in ye
County aforesaid [Berkeley].” f16 Again by purchase in 1698 and by grant in
1700 William Screven secured eleven hundred four acres on the west side of
Pooshee or Biggin Swamp near Wampee, more than forty miles fromCharleston.
This plantation he may have named Somerton, and it has since
1725 borne the title, but it is more probable that the whole community about
him was known to its members by that name; there was never a town in the
South Carolina sense. The neighboring grants were held by Permanow (or
Permanus) Screven, a son of Rev. William Screven, and by Elizabeth and
Robert Wetherick, Champernoun Elliott, and Humphrey Axtell, all Baptists
and all except the last in some way connected with Rev. William Screven.”

The Armstrong did not like a ‘de Soules’, de flowering one of their ladies, as it has said he was known to do. They took him and melted him in a big pot at Nine Stone Ridge (Stane Rig). Given the DNA of the Forresters, and there are still Forresters in this region, may be something happened to a Forrester lady. Would hate to have to claim relation to someone like that, but this all happened in the later part of the fourteenth century.

In 1877, before the town of Ramah existed, a group of 100 Mormons fleeing persecution in Arkansas came to the area we know as Timberlake Ranch, and established a settlement they called Savoia. Savoia was one of the first white settlements in Western New Mexico.
Unfortunately, along the way one family took refuge from the cold in an empty adobe house, which was clearly marked with the word, “smallpox.” Either because they couldn’t read or because the weather gave them no choice, this house is where their twin babies were born. It is also where they took on the germs they would carry to the small settlement of Savoia.
During the bitter cold and heavy snows of the winter of 1877-78, smallpox ravaged Savoia, taking one person after another. Mothers and babies, fathers and children, died.
Some of the bodies may have been buried in a hand-dug well close to Timberlake – Paul Merrill is trying to verify that story. We do know that at least thirteen smallpox victims are buried in a small cemetery just below the upper ranch house. It is a well-tended area enclosed by a black wrought-iron fence, eerie with the tragedy of the deaths of young parents and children buried there, all struck down within four months by a terrible disease.
The settlement survived for a time – in 1880k, there were ten families living in Savoia. But eventually most of the people left to form Ramah and other communities, and the area, which is now Timberlake Ranch, became the Hamblin Ranch (the Hamblins were part of the original Savoia group).
In addition to the graves of those who died in the smallpox tragedy of 1877-78, the cemetery contains the grave of Polly Ann Hamblin, who lived from 1900 to 1918. Some people say that Polly’s ghost haunts the upper ranch house; but that is another story.

Mutation 16519C is present in just about everyone. In fact, in more than half of the people. So what this really means is that it’s not really a mutation in the people who carry 16519C, it really was a mutation in the anonymous person who is the Cambridge Reference Sequence. But since they did not carry 16519C, it’s reported as a mutation in the rest of us. However, it’s really the “normal” state of the DNA, or what we call the ancestral state. As we remember Neil Armstrong, there are signs in the Borders referring to the ‘infamous Armstrong clan’
WHILST the world’s media celebrates Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon, his “giant leap forward for mankind”, it seems a tartan eclipse is still awaited before deepest state-imposed prejudice against the Armstrong – and Elliot – name is finally lifted.
In the heart of Liddesdale, adjoining the English border with Scotland, formerly the stronghold of Clans Armstrong and Elliot, a cruel and sinister prejudice against his family names from centuries past still stands prominent on official government quango, EU-promoted noticeboards.
Highlighted centrally in red on a large “ReiverTrail” tourist notice in Liddesdale, with clear association to the “infamous Armstrong clan’”, is stated: “If Jesus Christ were amongst them, they would deceave him”.
On another notice of the trail, Armstrongs are again referred to repeatedly in most negative terms, with an emphasised text on “the thieves of Liddesdale”, and mention of them being hanged and banished abroad.
Yet another “Reiver Trail” notice centres on the Elliots, with the highlighted central text: “The Elliots are grown so to seek blood they will make quarrel for the death of their grandfather and kill any of the name”.
It has to be noted that there were the most extreme reactions and strongest possible objections from local councillors and activists when the wording of the notices was proposed, but the local voice was overruled and despite local outrage dismay and embarrassment, the signs were imposed on them – and decades later still remain.
The Armstrongs and Elliots were very far from alone in infamous exploits at the time of border reiving times, and it has been argued over centuries by local scholars, including a local minister of more than 50 years, that they were subjected to very unjust persecution of the most extreme kind.
In fact the word Holocaust was used by the Liddesdale Bard John Byers to describe events in this land – a term which does not seem inappropriate when one reads and sees evidence of the Clearances which happened here.
Armstrongs lost virtually everything, their lands and goods taken from them and those left alive mostly banished.
The Elliots did little better, whilst other major reiving families made substantial gains and great wealth by carrying out merciless acts at King James VI’s command.
It is surely time the Scottish Government takes a small step to remove these signs, which broadcast rank discrimination, and which surely have no place in a country that declares it has made giant leaps forward in equality.
The wording and emphasis would surely not be allowed for any other ethnic group.
The quotes stem from Sir Walter Scott, whose extreme prejudice towards the people of the area only arose after he and his companion had spent seven summers touring Liddesdale, given free board and lodgings, feted as a dignitary by people living in comparative poverty to himself, and being recited and taught of the border ballads, which he later used in his writings.
Scott’s son-in-law Lockhart wrote that Scott boasted of never having to spend any money whatsoever over these seven summers, for himself or his companion.
A move to help return the local Langholm Moor, adjoining Liddesdale, to the community for ecotourism would seem an apt first step as a degree of compensation.
