Scottish Poetry Selection – Wha Daur Meddle Wi’ Me?
The royal coat of arms in Scotland has the Latin motto “Nemo me impune lacessit“. The English translation of this is “Nobody interferes with me with impunity” and this is often defiantly expressed in broad Scots as “Wha daur meddle wi’ me?” which is the title of this anonymous poem. But on this occasion it is being aggressively repeated by a member of the Elliot family, one of the Border families who not only fought their neighbours but were part of the first line of defence against marauding English invaders – and could sometimes defy the Scottish monarch as well!

My grandson took the Ancestry.com DNA test. He is a descendant of John Gresham of Orange County, Virginia who moved to Henry County, VA and received land there in a grant prior to the Revolutionary War. Following the war, the entire family of John Gresham moved into Pendleton County SC where my grandmother, his daughter Katie Gresham, married William Keeton. My grandson’s name is Robert Carwile and his information is on my Ancestry.com record. His relationships to the Keeton family are clearly established and in addition, his relationship to Jacob Carwile, Revolutionary War Soldier from Lynchburg Va are established. In addition, he has the lines that go back to the Wesson family and several others. I would like to know more about affixing his line to that of the Gresham family of antiquity. Gresham Y-DNA usually the first marker is a 14, and a SNP of R-L21.
If autosomal lineage shows a match to one of these of the Gresham group then the locality of origins, is likely near Gresham. Am and Elliott with R-U106, but match many of these Gresham, which my surname adoption locality is moated Bec of Norfolk, near moated Gresham Castle of Norfolk. This gave me a likely locality near Gresham which is Bec for my surname as Elfwold-Elwald which evolve to Elliott to be adopted. So linking in on and autosomal tree to one of these Gresham their heritage would lead to Gresham, Norfolk.
