Andrew (Dand) Ellot of Liddesdale accused in the slaughter of Hugh Douglas, referred to as Cowie of Gorrenberry, because it was a story used when he came down from Baillie in Teviodale, to Gorrenberry east of the Hermitage Castle in Liddesdale, to visit his second son Robert Ellot from Hob Elwode, adopt syster’s son of Clement Croser, known as Clementis Hob, and helped the family, the Gorrenberry family make up a Cowie story, so they could explain the sounds made by him working during the night in which he became known as The Cowie of Gorrenberry. It is felt he lived in Teviotdale with Gilbert, referred to Dandis Gib, which was Gilbert of the Goldern Garties, which became of the Gilbert of Stobs line.

To even read casually of the Border history would make one wonder what sort of women were these who mothered, married and supported these men, the Steel Bonnets. These were strong women, resilient women, loving women. Were it not so, we of the Elliot Clan would not be here today. Our Chief, Margaret Elliott, is blood and sinew of these people. She is also blood and sinew of another proud line of strong women. Chief Margaret is also a Southern Girl! Her paternal grandmother was bornin Georgia and other grandmothers were born in South Carolina and Tennessee. Many great in accordance with Douglas Scott of BC, Canada, Dand Ellot was banished from both Kingdoms in 1607, then shows up as Daniel Elliott, in Tullykelter, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland, as part of the Somerville Estate in-law to the Monea Hamilton. Names Somerville, and Ellott show up in 1610 Tyrone Muster, and a generation later in the Co. Fermanagh, Muster. James Somerville shows up in bother musters. 1610 James Somerville had son 1630 Somerville. Scots alias nickname for Andrew is Dand, Irish English it becomes Daniel from surname of Daniel-M’Daniel it may be obtained. Ellot family of Tullykelter were Anglican but nomally Catholic, from forenames show this, even the name in 1610 Ulster Muster of Co. Fermanagh, Marke Ellot shows this. Before 1650 the Scots used Ellot not Elliot with the Norman ‘i’. Daniel Elliott name in 1692 Salem Trials was spelled Elot, the ‘i’ was added likely because of a John Eliot (Eliot Hall Harvard) which came over on the Mayflower. The reason I present the screen is that different people get different screens. In genealogy on needs to research in the language of their ancestors or find someone who can. They are looking for new information which ties into their family lines. To teach technique though I try to use other families, on techniques of family. One is for the best research biased towards their own family.

“THE CHARLESTON CHURCH AND ITS BRANCHES
After long acceptance of 1682 or 1683 as the year in which Rev. William
Screven came to South Carolina, it now appears certain that he was still in
Kittery (then under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts, now Maine) in January,
1696; and as the first record of his presence in South Carolina is a warrant for
one thousand acres of land dated December 7, 1696, he must have arrived in
South Carolina sometime in that year. f13 Mr. Screven is claimed to have come
to Kittery from Somerton, in Somersetshire, England, where some one of his
name (though not himself) subscribed a Baptist confession of faith in 1656. In
Maine his activity among his Baptist brethren brought him into disfavor with
the authorities. He was summoned for “blasphemous speeches about the holy
ordinance of baptism” and imprisoned for refusing to pay the fine imposed;
and finally, after having been licensed to preach by the First Baptist Church in
Boston on January 11, 1682, he was ordered to leave Maine. He seems,
however, to have remained for more than fourteen years before coming to
Carolina. During those years he was active in the life of Kittery and in the
Baptist cause, having collected a congregation which was organized as a
church on September 25, 1682. f14
The three probable reasons for Mr. Screven’s selection of South Carolina for
his final settlement were that toleration existed there; that the family of his
wife, Bridget Cutt (or Cutts), had lived for sometime in Barbados, and may
have received first-hand reports of the advantages of the settlement of 1670 on
the Ashley River, f15 and coming himself from Somersetshire, Mr. Screven may
have been in communication with the party brought over by Blake. Either
through previous acquaintance or by accident, Rev. William Screven appeared
in this province about the time that Joseph Blake again became governor. He
secured a second warrant, for fifteen hundred acres of land, in December,
1696, indicating that he had brought in a considerable number of people. In the
same month “Thomas Bulling had a warrt for five hundred acres of Land Lying
at Sumer towne, on the West Side of Stewart’s line,” and Robert Wetherick
had one hundred acres at “Sumerton;” he is described in the records of the
Court of Ordinary in 1700 as “late of New England, then of Sommerton in ye
County aforesaid [Berkeley].” f16 Again by purchase in 1698 and by grant in
1700 William Screven secured eleven hundred four acres on the west side of
Pooshee or Biggin Swamp near Wampee, more than forty miles fromCharleston.
This plantation he may have named Somerton, and it has since
1725 borne the title, but it is more probable that the whole community about
him was known to its members by that name; there was never a town in the
South Carolina sense. The neighboring grants were held by Permanow (or
Permanus) Screven, a son of Rev. William Screven, and by Elizabeth and
Robert Wetherick, Champernoun Elliott, and Humphrey Axtell, all Baptists
and all except the last in some way connected with Rev. William Screven.”

So when a couple of genealogists agree, one with extensive research on familysearch,org even though she may be a crazy skiing grandma, and I of family, when Find-A-Grave, or a ‘Higher Up’, tries to supersede, because genealogy is the sharing and coming to agreement on family history, this ‘Higher Up’, is likely creating errors for family sharers of their own family’s history.

One thing which is how one does genealogy they are not allow to kick out the in-laws if they are to be a family historian. Those dang in-laws have a tendency to push you so far, where one would like to put them out the door. This ones younger than Bobby Burns a true Scott with spoke and wrote in the Scottish language. This person like James I of Scotland, and VI of England his native language is Scottish. This Walter Scott and the King James Bible are in the Queen’s English. In 1877, before the town of Ramah existed, a group of 100 Mormons fleeing persecution in Arkansas came to the area we know as Timberlake Ranch, and established a settlement they called Savoia. Savoia was one of the first white settlements in Western New Mexico.
Unfortunately, along the way one family took refuge from the cold in an empty adobe house, which was clearly marked with the word, “smallpox.” Either because they couldn’t read or because the weather gave them no choice, this house is where their twin babies were born. It is also where they took on the germs they would carry to the small settlement of Savoia.
During the bitter cold and heavy snows of the winter of 1877-78, smallpox ravaged Savoia, taking one person after another. Mothers and babies, fathers and children, died.
Some of the bodies may have been buried in a hand-dug well close to Timberlake – Paul Merrill is trying to verify that story. We do know that at least thirteen smallpox victims are buried in a small cemetery just below the upper ranch house. It is a well-tended area enclosed by a black wrought-iron fence, eerie with the tragedy of the deaths of young parents and children buried there, all struck down within four months by a terrible disease.
The settlement survived for a time – in 1880k, there were ten families living in Savoia. But eventually most of the people left to form Ramah and other communities, and the area, which is now Timberlake Ranch, became the Hamblin Ranch (the Hamblins were part of the original Savoia group).
In addition to the graves of those who died in the smallpox tragedy of 1877-78, the cemetery contains the grave of Polly Ann Hamblin, who lived from 1900 to 1918. Some people say that Polly’s ghost haunts the upper ranch house; but that is another story.

Modern Humans arrived to the area of present day Finland roughly 9000 years ago, after the ice sheets from the last glaciation began to retreat. As Finland remained geographically isolated from most of continental Europe, the early populations remained largely unaffected by the early European activities – such as the Roman, Celtic, and Iranian expansions. The first peoples of Finland settled in scattered settlements along the southern coasts of Finland and were soon forced northward by later migrations. By 1000 BCE, migrations into Finland pushed the indigenous Sami people into the northernmost reaches of the region. Other indigenous populations remained in the south and were either assimilated or intermarried with the migrating populations, leading to the development of the chieftain tribes of the Finns, Tavastians, and Karelians. Throughout much of history, populations in the Finland cluster remained organized into large hunter-gatherer and herding societies, some of whom continue this lifestyle to this day. During the Viking Age (800 – 1050 CE), Finland found itself between the Viking and Russian trade routes, and profited by providing furs to Viking traders; however, they were not known to have participated in any Viking raids. After the Viking Age, Finland was a battleground for the Russian and Swedish invading forces, both of which tried to lay claim to Finland. From the 12th century on, native Finish populations remained organized into their traditional tribal communities and were largely under Swedish control until the 1700’s, after which Russia gained short-lived political control over Finland. Throughout Finland’s history, the peoples of the region remained largely isolated and more culturally unaffected by invading populations than other European regions. In fact, Finland’s cultural autonomy can even be seen in their unique Finn-Ugrian language, which shares no similarities with Scandinavian or Slavic languages. First Baptist Church is the oldest Baptist Church in the South. It was established in 1682.
First Baptist Church, Charleston, the earliest Baptist church in the South was organized on September 25, 1682 in Kittery, Maine, under the sponsorship of the First Baptist Church of Boston. Late in 1696, the pastor William Screven, and 28 members of the Kittery congregation immigrated to Charleston, South Carolina. Near this time, two groups of settlers came to Charleston, one from southern England and one from Scotland. The Baptists among these groups were soon drawn into William Screven’s church. By 1708 he reported that the membership numbered 98.

1681, July – William Screven (founder of FBC) baptized at Boston
1682, September 25 – Church constituted at Kittery, Maine; Screven ordained as minister.
Mid 1690s – Church moves to Charleston, South Carolina
1699, July 18 – Church given plot of land at 61-63 Church Street by William Elliott.
1713 – William Screven dies at age 84.

Though Gib (Gilbert) ‘Golden Garters’, received a large dowry from marrying into the Harden Family, his grandson Sir Gilbert Elliot of Stobs of the line which became the Eliott of Stobs now 29th chief Margaret of Redheugh which is of the Elliot chieftain line.
A Scot of Harden became a Convinced Friend (Quaker), they put him into prison.

At the same time no doubt that Sir Gideon of Highchester’s second son William and the ancestor of the friend and parent of the author the representative of the family of Harden also embraced Quakerism. Gideon the latter converted entered into controversy with the Rev. James Kirkton author of the true and secret history of Scotland, which is mentioned by my ingenious friend Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe in this remarkable and curious edition of this work in 1817. Sir William Scott, the Brethren of the Brothers, remained in the midst of this defection an orthodox member of the church Presbyterian and us a uproot Walter de Raeburn to his heresy means that were more of persecution than persuasion. He was helped in his efforts by MacDougal of Makerston brother of Isabelle MacDougal wife of Walter and who like her husband had adopted the religion of Quakers Sir William Scott’s influence and that of Makerston were powerful enough to obtain two subsequent acts of the Privy Council of Scotland against Walter de Raeburn as heretic quakerism the co-inventor to be imprisoned first in the Edinburgh….

When I first started to use the stacks of genealogical research in the floors of the Church of Latter Day Saints office building north of the Hotel Utah, on the east of Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a young family second generation genealogist people and the professional genealogists older than I would assist me. They seem to take an interest in me because I did it as a hobby, enjoyed doing it.
So would like to assist this up and coming Paul Woodbury, so he may be able to teach others on the use of Y-DNA in genealogical research.

RootsTech 2022 Highlights.
Would like to present topic, Genealogy with DNA applied, at next session RootsTech 2023. As an old guy, and an amateur family historian – genealogists do not known who to contact. After all Bobby Jones was an amateur golfer and isn’t the history for the family. Why shouldn’t a family genealogist do a presentation on applying DNA to the family search?
The ladies are the genetic genealogists, the men have a tendency of being historian genealogists, which is not fine enough as the ladies are doing diligently enough to pick out individuals of families. A lot of men use history; all right for the ‘status quo’ of nations states but not find enough to pick out family which is needed for family history.
Let’s hear it for the ladies.
